About this course:

Formal caregivers (e.g. nurses, nursing assistants, social care workers etc) and informal caregivers (e.g. patients’ relatives, domestic helpers etc) and other individuals interested in learning how to effectively care about their patients will greatly benefit from joining and completing this 8-week course. All potential learners (caregivers of elderly or patients with chronic diseases) will acquire core knowledge and specialized training in order to acquire and/or enhance their basic healthcare skills, social/soft skills and ICT skills.

Syllabus

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with basic knowledge on how to ensure their safety while handling their patients and/or loved ones in need of care i.e. they will have the chance to understand the importance of looking after the health of their musculoskeletal system, how to move objects safely, how to move and transfer the patient safely and how to safely handle additional aids.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to get introduced to Internet basics and engage themselves with communication activities and exercises (Skype, videos etc).

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn about strengthening patients' confidence and autonomy and what does cooperation and coordination mean.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with basic knowledge on how to provide exercise and activity to a bed-rest patient in order to avoid the disuse syndrome. Carers will have the chance to develop their knowledge on the disuse syndrome and how it can be prevented by using correct body alignment, positioning techniques, mobility exercises and massage.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to learn how to understand the structure/layout of an email account, create and send an email message, navigate around the basic functions of an email account, select music in YouTube, capture images using their devices etc.

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn about better formal and informal cooperation and different kinds of mistreatment and well-treatment.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with basic knowledge on how to provide interventions to a bed-rest patient with Ineffective Breathing Pattern. Carers will have the chance to develop their knowledge on ineffective breathing pattern and to learn how to maintain patient airway with coughing techniques, mobilizing pulmonary secretions and maintaining or promoting lung expansion.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to learn how to carry out web searches in Wikipedia, forward information found, select and view videos in YouTube and take a picture to show something related to their patient’s care by using a combination of ICT skills from previous lessons.

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn more about better formal and informal cooperation, evaluation and techniques enforcing communication in cognitive impairment/dementia and evaluate their knowledge acquired so far.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with basic knowledge on how to provide self-care to a bed-rest patient. Carers will have the chance to develop their knowledge on self care deficit for feeding, bathing/hygiene, dressing/grooming, toileting and interventions for safe feeding, oral care, bathing/hygiene, dressing / grooming and toileting.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn what is a search engine, how to use a search engine to find information in general, to find information about something interesting for them and how to print.

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn more about evaluation and techniques enforcing communication in cognitive impairment/dementia and introduce themselves to tips for participation, communication and autonomy.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with basic knowledge on how to prevent or care for impaired skin integrity to a bed-rest patient. Carers will have the potential to develop their knowledge on basic principles for prevention and care of pressure ulcers.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to learn how to book a hospital visit, join the social media and create an account, add friends and share a picture or a web link.

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn more about tips for participation, communication and autonomy and best practice examples on how to interact with patients.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with online first aid courses, which will improve their knowledge and skills to help save someone’s life. Carers will have the chance to develop their knowledge on first-aid basics, first-aid on managing choking and breathing difficulties and first-aid on responding to fainting.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to learn how to select and play a game on their devices and how to create spreadsheets.

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will learn more about best practice examples on how to interact with patients, watch a video about a patient with Alzheimer’s and his interaction with his son and read about the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) test and its administration and scoring instructions.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with online first aid courses that will provide them with knowledge and skills to help save someone’s life. Carers will have the chance to test their gained knowledge with a quiz and develop their skills on providing first-aid to bleeding and burns.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to learn how to listen to music from YouTube and at the same time compose and send an email message, how to send a picture through email or Skype and how to add calendar events.

Soft skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be able to participate in a self-evaluation quiz and test the knowledge that was acquired during the previous weeks of training in soft skills.

Basic skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will be provided with online first aid courses that will improve their knowledge and skills to help save someone’s life. Carers will have the chance to develop their skills on providing first-aid to allergic reactions, as well as diarrheas and vomiting and to test their gained knowledge with a quiz.

ICT skills

In this module, all caregivers/learners will have the opportunity to learn what is a forum, how to use a forum, how to create a EuroPass Resume or CV and how to search for a job in the EuRES portal.
